Happy Diwali!
दिवाली की शुभकामनाएं

– Lipikaar Team

This Diwali we thought we would give you a glimpse of how the festival is celebrated in different parts of India. [Reference]

In Maharashtra, Diwali starts from Vasubaras which is the 12th day of the 2nd half of the Marathi month Ashvin. It is then followed by Dhantrayodashi (धनतेरस), Naraka Chaturdashi, Lakshmi Pooja, Padwa, finally Bhaubeej. Interestingly, bathing is an elaborate process on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi. It involves abundant use of ‘ubtans’, oils and perfumes, and is preceded by an Aarti performed on the person by some lady, usually mother or wife. The whole process is referred to as ‘abhyanga-snaan’.

In Gujarat, Diwali celebrations begin with Agyaras. Followed by Vagh Baras (Worship of cow), Dhanteras (worship of Goddess Lakshmi), Kali Chaudash (worship of goddess Kali), Diwali, Bestu Varas (Hindu New Year), Bhai Bij(sister worships her brother and prays for his well being), Labh Pacham and Dev Diwali.
In some villages, Vagh Baras is celebrated in a unique style where some men are colored in stripes (representing Vagh) and others in plain white or other colors (representing the cattle). The Vagh chases the cattle and at the end of it, the village people celebrate the occasion by feasting together at a common place.

In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated as Deepavali and the diyas are called deepams. It is important to note that, the city Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu is the capital of India’s firework industry with about 8,000 factories, producing 90 percent of the country’s total fireworks output. It also has the world’s largest fireworks manufacturing unit.

In Kerala, Narakasura Vadha (the day Narakasura died) is celebrated as Deepavali. It marks the triumph of good over evil. Here Deepavali falls on the preceding day of the New Moon in the Malayalam month Thulam (October-November). Similarly in Karnataka, Diwali is celebrated as Narakachaturdashi.

In West Bengal and Assam, Kali Puja (worship of Goddess Kali) is an important part of Diwali celebrations.

In Orissa, a special kind of rangoli is drawn. It contains a sailboat with 7 chambers in the north (meant for seer or Rishis), 10 in the east (meant for Gods) and 12 in the south (meant for manes and forefathers). Several items like cotton, mustard, salt, asparagus root, turmeric, sweets etc. are kept over each chamber. Prasad is kept over the central chamber. Over the prasad, is a jute stem with a cotton wick tied around the edge which is lit during the pooja.

In Goa and Konkan region, Diwali begins on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi. The house is decorated with kandil, lamps, mango leaves and marigold flowers. A bitter berry called kareet is crushed under the foot to signify killing of Narkasur (symbol of evil and ignorance).

If you have any tradition that you follow during Diwali, we would love to hear about it. Let us know what makes Diwali special for you.

P.S. Here’s how you can wish your friends “Happy Diwali” in their language:
Hindi: दिवाली की शुभकामनाएं
Marathi: दिवाळीच्या शुभेच्छा
Telugu: దీపావళి శుభాకా౦క్షలు
Kannada: ದೀಪಾವಳಿ ಹಬ್ಬದ ಶುಭಾಷಯಗಳು
Malayalam: ദീപാവലി ആശംസകള്‍
Tamil: தீபாவளி நல்வாழ்த்துக்கள்

रास्तो मे धूल है
कीचड़ भी है पर ये याद रखना
